Private Collector and Photographer
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Joaquim Paiva, Brazilian photographer and photography collector, has been collecting contemporary photography since 1978. His collection is comprised of works by Brazilian and international photographers, and amounts to approximately 2900 prints. The collection spans a wide range of themes and techniques, and has been exhibited in Brazil and abroad in such locations as Buenos Aires, 1997; Houston FotoFest, 1998; Lima, 1999; Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, 2001; São Paulo, 2002, in conjunction with the São Paulo International Biennial; Nice, France, 2005; Museum of Modern Art (MAM), Rio de Janeiro, 2016.
Nearly two-thirds of Paiva’s collection (1963 images) are housed at MAM, the first donation having taken place in 2005, with new bodies of work added in 2011 (412 prints by 123 foreign photographers and artists), and again in 2013.
Paiva is pleased to have reviewed at every FotoFest Meeting Place since 2000. In addition to the Meeting Place, he has reviewed at Encuentros Abiertos in Buenos Aires, at FotoRio and Porto Alegre FestFotoPoa in Brazil, and at PhotoESPAÑA in Madrid, among others.
As a photographer, he has exhibited his own work in Brasilia, Brazil; IVAM, Valencia, Spain; Mexico City, Mexico; Maison Européene de la Photographie, Paris. Since the 1970s, Paiva has followed the international photography and art scene, during which time he has lectured on photography and curated exhibitions of work from his collection.
Paiva is interested in reviewing most types of work, particularly fine art photography, as well as experimental and creative bodies of work in which the photographer is committed to quality, innovation, and contemporary issues. He will offer critiques and advice on the photographer´s work, and can consider acquiring some photographs and photobooks for his collection.
