Design Director & Commissioning Editor
Thames & Hudson, London, United Kingdom
With the creative bookmaking and publishing operating out of London, Thames & Hudson is one of the world’s most respected art, design and photography book publishers, and has a truly international outlook, publishing for book lovers in all five continents.
Johanna Neurath has worked in illustrated book publishing for 30 years as a picture editor, book and jacket designer, art director, and commissioning editor. When not making books (or helping others to do the same), Neurath is an active member of the photography community. She is a regular portfolio reviewer at various international photo festivals, has led practical workshops on bookmaking for photographers, and served as a judge for the Sony World Photography Awards, for D&AD Next Photographer, and for the Firecracker Photographic Grant, an award reserved for female documentary photographers. Neurath is one of five founding members and Directors of Photo Meet, a London based organization of photo-editors and photographers who provide advice and education for emerging photographers and students. She is also a practicing artist; Hoxton Mini-Press published a book of her own street photography, Columbia Road, in 2015.
Neurath is interested in all genres of photography, but does not wish to see nude or stock photography. In exceptional circumstances, she may help a photographer or author propose a book project to Thames & Hudson or one of its co-publishing partners. She can be most constructive in offering advice on editing and sequencing work, or giving design tips to photographers. She has inside knowledge on the publishing process from both the publishers and the photographers perspectives, and can give guidance on how and when to put a book proposal together for a publisher—or on things to watch out for when self publishing.
