Assistant Curator, Department of Photographs
The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA, USA
Arpad Kovacs joined the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum as an assistant curator in 2011. Recent exhibitions include Breaking News: Turning the Lens on Mass Media (2016-2017); Richard Learoyd: In the Studio (2016); In Focus: Animalia (2015); Hiroshi Sugimoto: Past Tense (2014); Werner Herzog: Hearsay of the Soul (2013); The Photographs of Ray K. Metzker and the Institute of Design (2012).
He is interested in contemporary documentary practices, photographs that explore the legacies of conceptualism, and work that challenges accepted notions of identity. He is not interested in commercial photography or meeting with photographers whose sole purpose is to have their work represented in the Getty Museum’s collection. As a museum curator, he can provide thoughtful feedback that helps to position a photographer’s work in a historical context and help to identify strengths and potential areas for improvement.
