San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose, CA, USA
Cathy Kimball is the Executive Director of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and is responsible for artistic programming and administration. During her 17-year tenure at the ICA, she has implemented a number of new programs including “NextNew,” which focuses on emerging artists, as well as the ICA’s “Façade” program, which includes installations in the front windows of the gallery. She has curated several dozen exhibitions at the ICA, and has authored numerous exhibition catalogues. Kimball came to the ICA from the San Jose Museum of Art where she served as Curator for four years. During her time at SJMA, she curated a number of high-profile exhibitions, including Alternating Currents: American Art in the Age of Technology, Selections from the Permanent Collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Surroundings: Responses to the American Landscape (also curated from the Whitney’s permanent collection). Before moving to the West Coast in 1995, Kimball was the curator at the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in Summit.
In addition to a focus on emerging and mid-career artists, the ICA places special emphasis on installation art, works on paper, and technology based work. Ms. Kimball is interested in reviewing all types of work at the FotoFest Meeting Place, from those that use antiquated techniques to innovative new media projects and installation proposals. In addition to providing feedback on individual portfolios, she can also suggest alternative opportunities for promoting the work. In rare cases, the ICA may offer opportunities for inclusion in group exhibitions. Kimball has included several artists found at the FotoFest Meeting Place in ICA exhibitions.
