EIKON – International Magazine for Photography and Media Art, Vienna, Austria
Nela Eggenberger studied art history at the University of Vienna. She is Chief Editor of EIKON – International Magazine for Photography and Media Art, a position she has held since 2013. From 2005-2013, she worked for art institutions in Vienna such as MUMOK, WestLicht and the art journals frame and EIKON. In 2016, she published 5 x 5. Photo Tracks, which includes contributions by David Bate, Linde B. Lehtinen, Steffen Siegel, Abigail Solomon-Godeau and Urs Stahel. Furthermore, she cooperated on exhibition projects with KUNST HAUS WIEN (Pas de Deux, 2015), BAWAG PSK Contemporary (FRAGILE, with Gregor Ecker, 2013). Together with Marielis Seyler she initiated her latest project, the Europe-wide EIKON Award (45+) for women photographers and media artists aged 45 years and older. She frequently participates in art fairs and photo festivals around Europe and the United States.
Eggenberger is interested in conceptual bodies of work, and appreciates a good sense of composition, craftsmanship, and most importantly a steady relation to fine arts. She is not interested in seeing mere commercial, fashion, or documentary photography. With her editorial position, she offers exceptional artists the opportunity to publish their work in EIKON, or to exhibit at EIKON Schaufenster – the magazine’s own show room, located in the MuseumsQuartier Wien. Moreover, she recommends artists for the Q21 Artist-in-Residence program in Vienna, which facilitates international artists who do not normally reside in Austria.
