James Maloney is a past member of the boards of directors of both FotoFest and the Houston Center of Photography. He is presently a member of the Board of Trustees at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and a member of its Photography Collection Committee.
Maloney has been collecting photography since the late 1980s. His collection consists of images from as early as 1903 and continues through the present. The collection includes American, Czech, French, German, Hungarian, Central and South American, and Swiss photographers.
Maloney is interested in seeing work that demonstrates originality in vision and excellent craftsmanship. He prefers to see actual prints as opposed to computer images, and is primarily interested in photographs of individuals, street scenes, still lifes and the like. He is not particularly interested in landscapes.
A number of the photographers represented in his collection are by individuals he has met at the FotoFest’s Meeting Place over the past two decades.
