Mary Heathcott

Executive Director
Blue Star Contemporary, San Antonio, TX, USA

Mary Heathcott is the Executive Director of Blue Star Contemporary, where she heads its exhibition and educational programs, guided by the bold mission “to inspire the creative genius in us all.” As San Antonio’s premiere nonprofit venue for contemporary art, Blue Star Contemporary presents more than 20 exhibitions annually, engaging international and regional artists through innovative exhibitions; a residency partnership with the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin; public programs; and the MOSAIC Student Artist Program, an after-school program for high school youth seeking professional development in the field of art.

Prior to joining Blue Star Contemporary in 2014, Heathcott was the Deputy Director at Artpace San Antonio, an international artist-in-residence program that has attracted more than 100 renowned artists and guest curators from around the world to explore new directions in their work, and provided a platform for exhibitions and education programs that further extend contemporary art dialogue. From 2001-2006, Heathcott was on staff at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. In her capacity as Manager of Individual Giving at the MCA, she acted as the liaison for the museum’s Collectors Forum, organizing travel opportunities and collector-based programming, as well as the annual acquisition of a new artwork for the museum’s permanent collection.

Heathcott received her master’s degree in the Humanities from the University of Chicago in 2001, where her research in art history culminated in a thesis exploring the history of stereoscope photography, “Collapsed Elemental Perspective.” She received her BA in Art History in 1998 from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, where she now happily resides with her husband and son.

Jacqueline McGilvray

Exhibitions and Programs Manager
Blue Star Contemporary, San Antonio, TX, USA

Jacqueline McGilvray is the Exhibitions and Programs Manager of Blue Star Contemporary, San Antonio’s longest running non-profit for contemporary art. In her role as Exhibitions and Programs Manager, McGilvray serves as the assistant curatorial staff, working directly with Blue Star’s Executive Director to research, curate, and design exhibitions. In addition to offering innovative exhibitions, Blue Star Contemporary facilitates a residency program for San Antonio artists at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany, and provides art education programs to the community, including the MOSAIC after school program for high school youth.

Prior to joining Blue Star Contemporary, McGilvray worked for various arts organizations and institutions in exhibition coordination, collections archiving, and curatorial writing, taught undergraduate photography courses, and worked with refugees and at-risk youth. She holds an MFA in Photography and Integrated Media from Ohio University and a BFA in Photography from Texas State University.

McGilvray is looking for artists for possible exhibition opportunities. She is interested in reviewing work that participates in and responds to the dialogues of contemporary art, work that is conceptually based, and work that engages the medium and history of photography in new ways. She is also interested in work with a focus on social practice. She is not interested in commercial, fashion, visual communication/communication design photography, or street photography.
