BIOGRAPHY

Annu Palakunnathu Matthew’s photo-based artwork reexamines cultural histories, identity, and memory.

Matthew’s recent solo exhibitions include: Generations, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada (2015); The Virtual Immigrant, 10th Annual Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, Toronto (2015); and Indelible Memories, sepiaEYE, New York (2015–16). Matthew has exhibited her work at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum, Providence; Portland Museum of Art, Oregon; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Sharjah Art Museum, United Arab Emirates; Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Maharashtra, India, as well as at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, Washington, D.C. In addition, her work can be found in collections such as the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; Harvard University Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona; and the RISD Museum. Her fellowships include: Fulbright (2012); John Guttmann Photography Fellowship; The San Francisco Foundation (2003); and Rhode Island State Council of the Arts (2001). She has been an artist-in-residence at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York, and the MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, New Hampshire.

Matthew is a professor of art at the University of Rhode Island (URI) in Providence and director of the URI Center for the Humanities.
