BIOGRAPHY

One of Canada’s most respected photographers, Edward Burtynsky received his B.A.A. in photography/media studies from Ryerson University, Toronto in 1982, and in 1985 founded Toronto Image Works, a photography and new media center that caters to all levels of the city’s arts community.

Burtynsky’s remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of over sixty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, Spain; the Tate Modern, London, England; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California. His works are exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia, and his images appear in numerous periodicals including Canadian Art, Smithsonian, and Harper’s Magazine, among many others. An active lecturer on photographic art, Burtynsky has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada and received numerous awards and distinctions, including seven honorary doctorate degrees.
